New partnership provides educational opportunities for financially disadvantaged Lebanese students

AUB and SSG signed the agreement on September 4, 2014 in the presence of Association President Jamil Ibrahim and General Secretary Abdel Aziz Sweidan, who signed on behalf of SSG, as well as other SSG representatives and senior AUB administrators.
“We are grateful for the generous support of SSG," said AUB Provost Ahmad Dallal. "This partnership will help grow our financial aid program so we can continue to bring in students from all corners of Lebanon and maintain a diverse student body, which is a central component of the liberal arts education experience.”
The scholarship will provide educational opportunities to bright but financially needy Lebanese students pursuing their undergraduate or graduate academic studies at AUB.
Currently, at least 40 percent of AUB students are on some form of financial aid. AUB’s financial aid budget for the 2014-15 academic year is $29 million.
The scholarship will commence in the fall semester of the 2014-15 academic year and will benefit up to five new students in each cohort year. Undergraduate students as well as graduate students who meet the scholarship requirements of academic excellence, financial need, and academic major, are entitled to benefit from the SSG-AUB Scholarships. Previous year recipients will continue to be granted support till their graduation as long as they maintain good academic standing and demonstrate financial need.
Established in 1969, the Association of Specialization and Scientific Guidance is a local nonprofit organization that does not practice any political activity or religious favoritism, but endeavors to develop the social and educational welfare of the Lebanese community. It offers Lebanese students, aspiring to continue their studies in Lebanon or abroad, scholarships for higher studies and specializations. Student’s selection criteria are based on academic excellence and social needs, with the firm belief that students are the basis of a prosperous society. In addition, the association supports the welfare of orphans and senior citizens, striving to ensure them a suitable lifestyle in accordance with their ages and personal beliefs.

“SSG’s vision and motto has always been to support needy and bright students, regardless of their religious background or the area they come from,” said Sweidan. “This aligns with AUB’s own credo which pledges to keep the University for ‘all conditions and classes of men without regard to color, nationality, race or religion.’ So we could not choose a better fitting partner than AUB.”
