H.E. Ms. Nicoletta Bombardiere, Ambassador of Italy to Lebanon, has recently visited USEK accompanied by Mr. Pietro Eynard, Second Secretary, and Prof. Massimo Maria Caneva, President of the European Association of International Studies (AESI).

The visit comes within the scope of the Rome International Seminar (RIS) held at USEK, aiming to strengthen cooperation and mutual academic interests in terms of diplomacy and peace-building activities.

The RIS held on "University and Diplomacy for Peace" included an online intervention for Major General Stefano Del Col, Former Commander at the UNIFIL, which was enriching for both current students at the School of Law and Political Sciences and the graduates of the Master of Cooperation for Peace and Development.

The University of Balamand welcomed Dr. Moustafa Al Helwe, who was tasked with delivering a collection of books from Syndey – Australia to the Issam Fares Library Learning Center.

Dr. Al Helwe was received by Dr. George Bahr, University of Balamand Provost, as an envoy for the “Poetry and Heritage Association” led by Notary Public and Lebanese Diaspora, Dr. Bahia Abu Hamad. Also present at the book handover were Dr. Hanna El-Nakket, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences as well as Mr. Ibrahim Farah, Ms. Dalia Koulaima, and Dr. Doreen Nasr from the Issam Fares Library Learning Center.
The books are comprised of a selection of poems written by Lebanese poet Charbel Baini as well as a number of auto-biographies. Charbel Baini immigrated to Australia in 1971 and has since established his own magazine entitled "Al-Ghurba" and a website of the same name. His contribution to the Lebanese Expat art movement earned him the title "poet of the diaspora”. On that account, the addition of his work to the university’s Library will amass huge cultural enrichment to its shelves.
In his handover speech, Dr. Al Helwe stated: "We would like to thank Dr. Bahia Abu Hamad and poet Charbel Baïni for creating this cultural connection with the University of Balamand that is crystalized by the handover of this huge collection of publications. We are honored to present the work of poet Charbel Baini, who is one of Lebanon’s most prominent literary figures living abroad.”
In turn, Dr. Bahr noted: "We, at the University of Balamand, welcome any cultural and intellectual venture that enriches the Balamand Library with more creativity. This occasion is a translation of the Lebanese expatriate's efforts to ratify their unique presence on the Lebanese national scene."

The University of Balamand, along with Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), the University of California in San Diego, and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Morocco, has obtained a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a joint project called “The GeoHealth Hub for Climate Change and Health in the Middle East and North Africa.” The $ 3 million grant will be shared by all collaborating institutions to implement the project over the course of 5 years. The partnership also includes the World Health Organization (WHO)’s Center for Environmental Health Action, the University of California Berkely, Harvard University.

Leading the project at the University of Balamand is Dr. Myriam Mrad, assistant professor and chairperson of the Department of Public Health. The aim of the GeoHealth Hub is to address the impacts of climate change on health and the environment, identify areas of development, build capacities, and train higher-education personnel in Lebanon, Jordan, and Morocco on air pollution and water quality modeling techniques and advanced environmental epidemiology methods. This project has great transformative potential for the region because “regardless of variabilities and nuances, most of the countries in the region suffer from similar environmental problems which can all be traced back to the same root cause: limited and ineffective environmental health policies,” said Dr. Mrad. The development of environmental health strategies requires political will, but it also depends on the production of high-quality research and reliable evidence to direct and inform said strategies. Higher education institutions in the Eastern Mediterranean Region have a great role to play in climate action, and that is in improving the quality and increasing the volume of climate and environmental health research and building the capacities of their personnel to increase the number of experts in the field.

In her letter of support to the project, Dr. Huda Abu-Saad Huijer, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, echoes the same sentiment: “our vision for FHS is to become a world-class Faculty of Health Sciences, transforming education and health care and being responsive to the needs of the population.” Dr. Abu-Saad Huijer expressed her commitment to sustain the exchange of knowledge beyond the period of the NIH funding through adjunct/teaching/visiting professorship positions. “We have the required infrastructure, and we are looking for international collaborations to launch [the GeoHealth Hub] in the best possible way,” said Dr. Abu-Saad Huijer.

In addition to the NIH grant, the Public Health Department has received a joined grant of $40 thousand from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) funded by USAID’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance. This project is in collaboration with the Society for the Advancement of Science and Technology in the Arab World (SASTA). This grant aims at strengthening Primary Health Care Centers (PHCC) in remote Lebanese areas through the integration of digital health solutions, such as deploying electronic systems of appointment scheduling and offering synchronous and asynchronous teleconsultations where access to healthcare providers is limited. The project will tackle three areas of intervention: immunization, reproductive health, and mental health. Most notably, to enhance vaccination rates in remote and underprivileged communities, the project builds on the success story of UOB’s vaccination center in North Lebanon, and it enjoys the support and the valuable expertise of Dr. Youssef Bassim, Chief Operating Officer of UOB, and key expert in integrating information technology and its applications into health care management. Dr. Myriam Mrad, who has conceptualized the project and is representing the University of Balamand in this collaboration, explains that digital health solutions for PHCC beneficiaries can mean improving access to high-quality services as well as reducing wait time, work absenteeism and transportation cost. They also protect from disruption of care delivery in the event of future pandemics or other nationwide events that can impede access to care.

As we celebrate the University of Balamand ranking second in Lebanon for the third year in a row in the QS World University Ranking, it is worth emphasizing that UOB ranked first in Lebanon when it comes to the Faculty-Student ratio. The remarkable feats that UOB has accomplished, despite being the youngest among the 8 most established Lebanese universities, are a testament to the tireless commitment of UOB and its faculty to provide high-quality education despite all challenges. This is why projects like the GeoHealth Hub are crucial to continuing to build on the strengths of the university, train and invest in faculty members, and provide both faculty and students with research opportunities. It is also important to transfer that wealth of knowledge and creativity into innovative interventions that can benefit and improve the health and wellbeing of our communities. ​

أقامت جامعة البلمند حفل تخرّج طلابها للعام الدراسي 2021-2022 في حرم الجامعة في الكورة برعاية وحضور صاحب غبطة البطريرك يوحنا العاشر يازجي، بطريرك انطاكية وسائر المشرق للروم الأرثوذكس ورئيس الجامعة الدكتور الياس وراق، إضافة إلى شخصيّات سياسيّة، دينيّة، اجتماعيّة، تربويّة، أمنيّة، عسكريّة، وإعلاميّة وعدد كبير من أهالي الطلاب والأقارب. وبلغ عدد الخرّيجين 1369 خريجًا من مختلف الاختصاصات والكليات من فروع الجامعة كافة، من الحرم الرئيسي في الكورة إلى عكار وسوق الغرب والدكوانة.

بدء الاحتفال
بدأ الاحتفال بدخول موكب الأساتذة والخرّيجين، من ثم صاحب الغبطة يرافقه رئيس الجامعة الدكتور الياس وراق. بعد النشيد الوطني، رحّبت مقدّمة الاحتفال الدكتورة مارلين كنعان، بالحضور، داعيةً صاحب الغبطة البطريرك يوحنّا العاشر إلى تلاوة الدعاء.

كلمة الخرّيجين
وألقت الطالبة سالي منصور، من كلية الصحّة العامة وعلومها، كلمة الخرّيجين، حيث توجّهت بالشكر إلى العائلة البلمندية الحاضنة، معربة عن فخرها بالانتماء إلى هذه الجامعة قائلةً: "ألفُ شُكرٍ وامتنان لجامِعتِنا، إداريّيها، طواقِمها التعليميّة. نودِّعُكم وبقلبِنا أجملُ الأثر، سنتابع في حياتنا المبادئَ الساميةَ التي أخذناها وتعلَّمناها مِنكِ. وسوفَ تبقى جامعتنا الصرحَ التعليميَ المميزَ لجيلِنا ولأولادِنا في المستقبل. تعلَّمتُ منها، أنَّ الخوفَ والتردّدَ مقرونانِ بالفشلِ دائمًا، وأنَّ الاجتهادَ والإقدامُ، هما أُساسُ النجاحِ والتقدُّمِ وحوافِزُ النهوضِ والاستمرار".

كلمة رئيس جامعة البلمند
وفي كلمته، قال رئيس الجامعة الدكتور الياس وراق:
في كُلِّ مَرَّةٍ أَقِفُ في حَفلِ التَخرُّجِ تُخالِجُني مَشاعرٌ مُتضارِبةٌ.
مَشاعِرُ فَرحٍ لِرؤيةِ أَجيالٍ نَشأت في هَذا الصَرح العِلميّ وَتعلَّمَت مِنهُ لُغةَ الحَياةِ، وَمَناهِجَ التَفكِيرِ، وَمَكارِمَ الأَخلَاقِ.
ومَشاعِرُ حُزنٍ لِفِراقِ أَبناءٍ تَرعرَعُوا فِي أَروقَةِ هَذه الجَامِعة، فَبادَلُوهَا حُبَّاً وَعَطفاً وَعِلماً وَوفاءً. وَهَذا الحُزن يَكمُنُ في إِدرَاكِنا أَنَّ العَددَ الأَكبَرَ مِنكُم يَطمَحُ لِمُغادَرةِ بَلدٍ أَحَبُّوهُ حُبَّاً جَمَّاً وَلكِنَّهُم سَئِموا عَيشَ مَآسِيهِ المُتكَرِّرة، وَأَحزَانِهِ الدَّائِمة.
فِي السِنين المَاضية تَوجَّهتُ إِلى البَلَمنديِّين والبَلَمندِيَّات الذِّين سَبَقوكم مِن عَلى هَذا المِنبَر، بِوصَايا أَبويَّة، وكُنتُ أَحُثُّهم أَن لا يَيأَسوا ولا يَتخاذَلوا.
أَمَّا اليَوم فَأقولُ لَكُم إِنَّكُم أَنتُم حُماةُ المُستقبَل، وَأنتُم حَامِلو المَسؤولية، وأَنتُم حُلُم الوَطَنِ وأَمَلِهِ.
نَعم أَنتُم حَاضِرُ هَذا البَلدِ، وَشُهودُ مَاضِيهِ، وَجُنُودُ مُستَقبَلِهِ.
في هَذَا الزَمنِ الصَعبِ، وَفي هَذِهِ الأَيَّامِ العَصِيبَةِ، تَجِدون أَلفَ سَببٍ وَسَبَب لِتهجُروا بَلَدَكُم، وَتُهاجِروا مِن دُونِ تَردُدٍ أَو نَدَم. فِي خِضَّمِ هَذِهِ الأَزمَاتِ المُتكرِّرة تَختَفي كَلِماتُ الأَمَل، وَتَنْضُبُ تَعابِيرُ التَفاؤُل.
وَلَكِن أَعودُ لِأَقُولَ لَكُم لَا تَتَخلُّوا عَن مَسؤُولِياتِكُم تِجاهَ وَطَنِكُم.
أَحِبُّوهُ مِن دُون مُقابِل.
وَأَحِبُّوهُ بِأنَانيةٍ كَما تُحِبُّونَ أَنفُسَكُم،
وَأَحِبُّوهُ بِحَنانٍ كَما تُحِبُّونَ أَهلَكُم،
وَأَحِبُّوهُ كَي يَبقَى شُعلةً فِي قُلوبِكُم وَعُقُولِكُم وَوِجدَانِكُم، وَإِن غَادَرَتْهُ أَقْدَامُكُم.
نَعَم أَنتُم المَسؤُولون فِي بَلدِ اللامَسؤُولين. أَنتُم مَسؤُولُون عَن تَوعِيةِ شَعبٍ أَنهَكَتهُ حُرُوبُ المَاضي، وَأَزَماتُ الحاضر، وغيابُ المستقبل.
أَنتُم مَسؤولُونَ عَن إِعَادةِ رُوحِ الأَملِ في قَلبِ شَعبِكُم، هَذا الشَعب الذي سَئِم فَسادَ حُكَّامِه، وَاستِبدَادِهِم، وَغِياب ضَمائِرهِم، وَهَوسِهِم بِالسُلطَة، والمَناصِب والمَال الحَرام.
نَعم أَنتُم المَسؤُولون عَن تَوعِيةِ شَعبِكم، هَذا الشَعب الذّي تَعمَّدَ حُكَّامُهُ أَن يَزِيدُوهُ فَقرَاً وَجَهلاً وَيأَساً وإِحبَاطاً.
تَعمَّدُوا أَن يُهَجِّروا شَبابَهُ الطَامِح المُتعلِّم، وشِيبَهُ المُثَّقَف، المُبدِع، لِكي يَتحكَّمُوا بِمن آثَرَ البَقاء فَيجعَلوا مِنهُ عَبداً ذَلِيلاً، رَاضِخاً لِأَهوائِهِم، مُتغَاضِياً عن جَهلِهِم، مُسامِحاً لِهدرِهِم وفَسادِهم وَغِيِّهم. نَعم هَذِه مَسؤولِيَّةِ كُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِنكُم، أَن يَستَنهِضَ حُريَّةَ الفِكرِ في هَذا الشَعب الذِّي فُرِضَ عَليهِ العَوَز بَعدَ أَن سُرِقَ جَنى عُمرهِ، وَتَلاشَت أَحلامُهُ في عَيشٍ كَرِيمٍ، وَسُلِبَت كَرَامَتُهُ عَلى يَدِ تُجَّارِ الهَيكَل.
وَنَعَم أَنتُم المَسؤولُون عَن اِسترجَاعِ وَطنٍ مِن يَدِ حُكَّامٍ مُغتَصِبِين لِحقُوقِ شَعبِهِم، مُراهِنِينَ عَلى يَأسِ الشَبابِ وَهِجرةِ الأَبنَاءِ. فلا تَتهاونُوا ولا تَتَراجَعُوا.
نَعم كَما قَال جُبران خَليل جُبران "قَد تَبكِي وَهذَا حَقُّكَ، وَقَد تَحزَن وَهذَا حَقُّكَ، لَكنْ إِيَّاكَ أَن تَنْكسِر".
فإِيَّاكُم أَن تَنكَسِروا أمَامَ مَصاعِبِ الحَياةِ، وإِيَّاكُم أن تَتراجَعوا عَن تَحقيقِ أحلامِكُم.
وَلأجل حِمايةِ هَذهِ الأَحلَامِ، وَحِفظِ الأَمل بِالمُستقبَل، تَعَّهدَت جَامعةُ البَلَمند أَن تَلتَزِمَ بِمساعَدةِ كُلِّ مَن تَواجَد فِي حَرَمِها، مِن طُلَّابٍ وَأَساتِذةٍ ومُوظَّفِين. فَأبَت أَن تَكُون مَصنَعاً يُنتِجُ الشَهادَات ومَكتباً يَخلِقُ فُرصَ العَمَل. فَهذِه الجَامِعة المُبارَكَة مِن كُلية الطُوبى، سَيدة البَلمَند، أَبَت إِلا أَن تَعيشَ وَجعَ طُلَّابِها وَمُعاناةِ أَهلِهِم، فتَحمَّلت مَا تَحمَّلَتْهُ مِن أَعباءٍ مادّيةٍ، رَافضةً عَلى مَدى سَنَتين أَن تُشارِكَ هَذِه الأَعبَاء مَعَهُم، شُعُوراً مِنها بِأنَّ وَاجِبَها أَن تَكُون رافعةَ الأَمَان ومَصدَرَ الاطمِئنَان لِمُجتَمَعِنا.

وَكَذلِك كَان التَعاطِي مَع الطَاقَمِ التَعلِيمي والإِدارِي، بِحَيثُ سَعَت الجَامعة، بِحسَبِ إِمكانِيَّاتِها، إِلى مُسانَدَتِهِم مَاديّاً لِلحِفاظ عَلى أَبسَط مُتطَلِّباتِ العَيشِ الكَريم، عِلماً أَنَّ جَامعةَ البَلمند هي مِن الجَامعاتِ القَليلةِ الغَيرِ مَدعُومة لَا من سَفاراتٍ، وَلَا مِن دُوَلٍ، وَلَا من أَحزابٍ، وَ ذَلِكَ لِيَبقى قَرارُها حُرّاً مُستقِلاً لا مَرهُوناً ولا مُصَادَراً.

وَبِهذا قَدَّمَت جَامِعةُ البَلمند مِثالاً يُحتَذى بِهِ في تعَزيزِ دَورِ الجَامِعاتِ عَلى صَعيدِ المُجتَمعِ والوَطنِ عَلَّ مَن هُم سَاسةٌ في هَذا الوَطن يَتعلَّمون مَعنَى المَسؤُوليّة ومَعنَى المُواطَنَة.

وَلكِن مَع الأَسَف فَهُم لَا يَقرأون لِيتعلَّموا، وَإِن قَرأوا فَهُم لَا يَفقَهُون مَا يَقرأون. فَهُم عَبَدةُ مَالٍ وَسُلطَةٍ، وَأنتم رِجالُ عِلمٍ وَمَعرِفةٍ.
وَكَما قَالَ الإِمامُ عَليّ بِن أَبي طَالِب "الْعِلْمُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْمَالِ، فالْعِلْمُ يَحْرُسُكَ وَأَنْتَ تَحْرُسُ المَالَ، هَلَكَ خُزَّانُ الْأَمْوَالِ وَهُمْ أَحْيَاءٌ، وَالْعُلَمَاءُ بَاقُونَ مَا بَقِيَ الدَّهْرُ".
هَؤلُاءُ هُم حُكَّامنا، الكَثِيرونَ حَولَ السُلطَة، والقَلِيلونَ حَول الوَطن. لَا أَدري مَن مِنهُم باعَ الوَطن وَلَكِنّني أَعلَمُ وأَرى مَن دَفَعَ الثَمَن.
فَكَمَا قَالَ أَحَدُهُم "فِي وطَنِي يَستَشهِدُ بَائِعُ الزُهور، وَيُعتَقَل بَائِعُ الخُضَار، ويُجَرَّم بَائِع البِقالَة. فَفِي وَطَني كُلُّ البَاعَة مُستَهدَفُون، إِلا بَاعةُ الوَطَن، فَهُم بِالأمنِ والتَرَفِ يَنعَمُون".
فَنَعم أَنتُم المَسؤُولُون عَن إِعَادةِ وَطنٍ مَظلُومٍ لِشعبٍ مَقهُور وَتَذكَّرُوا دَومَاً، أَنَّ الفَسَادَ يَطولُ عُمرُهُ كُلَّمَا اِنسَحَبَ الشُرفاءُ طَمَعاً بِالسَلامةِ وَرَغَدَ العَيشِ.
فَلا تَدَعوا فَسَادَهم يَطولُ وإِن طَالَت أَعمارُهُم.
مِن هُنا أُقولُ إِن أَرَدتُم أَن تَكرَهوا حُكَّامَ وَطنِكم، إكرَهوهُم قَدرَ مَا تَشاؤُون. وَلكِن لَا تَكرَهُوا وَطَنَكُم، بَل بَايِعُوهُ وَلَا تَبِيعُوه. وَإِن تَرَكتُموه عُودوا إِليهِ مَتى اِستَطعتُم.
وَإِن أَيسرتُم سَاعِدوا شَعبَهُ مَتى قَدِرتُم، فَلُبنانُ باقٍ بِوجُودِكُم، مُتألِّقٌ بِنُبوغِكُم، وَصَامِدٌ بِجُهدِكُم وَسَعيِكُم.
عُشتُم مَسؤولِينَ أَحراراً،
عَاشَت جَامِعةُ البَلمَند، مِنبَراً لِلعلمِ والنَزَاهَة،
وَعاشَ لُبنان، خَالِداً بِشَعبِه، كَريماً بِشَبابِه.

كلمة خطيب الاحتفال
أما كلمة خطيب الاحتفال فألقاها الدكتور عصام عوض، الذي توجّه إلى الخرّيجين قائلًا:
لذا، أيها الخرّيجون الأعزاء، تذكّروا سبب مجيئكم إلى الجامعة، وما الذي جعلَكم تستمتعون وتنجحون في مادة أكثر من غيرها. لن تجدوا السعادة أبدًا ما لم تكونوا صادقين مع أنفسكم.
لقد أَكملَ كلُّ واحدٍ منكم دراسات مختلفة وأتقن المجال الذي اختاره. أنتم اليوم في القمة. لكن هل فكرتم بمدى أهمية هذه الدراسات لاحقًا؟ سيصبح الكثير مما تعلّمتموه قديمًا (ربما باستثناء علم اللاهوت) وستحتاجون لمواصلة العِلم، وإعادة تقييم الأفكار القديمة واكتساب أفكار جديدة.
في العلم، تُعرَف هذه العملية بـ "فرضية التطور". فمتى كان هناك أيُ التباس، نقوم بإلغاء الأفكار السابقة ونؤيّد أفكارًا جديدة. تعلّموا اتّباع هذه الطريقة. إذ سيتّم دحض العديد من النظريات التي كنتم تعتمدون، وستَظهر مفاهيم جديدة لم يعرف بها حتى ألمَع أساتذتكم. لقد اكتشف زملائي مؤخرًا إثر ملاحظات في المختبر، أن الجزيئات الصغيرة التي تُنتجها البكتيريا في الأمعاء يمكن أن تسبب نزيفًا في الدماغ البشري، وذلك فقط عندما تتعطّل بعض الجينات في الدماغ. من كان يظنّ ذلك؟ ويا لها من آثار هائلة على علم الأحياء والطب! نعم، سوف تصبحُ الشرائع التي تعلّمتها مؤخرًا في الجامعة مراجع تاريخية في حياتك، تتلاشى في ضوء المعرفة الجديد الساطع.
أحبائي الخرّيجين، لقد أُعدِدتم بتراث روحي غنيّ وخلفية أكاديمية متينة. على الرغم من التحدّيات الهائلة، فقد منحَكم أهلكم وأساتذكم وأصدقائكم حبًا كبيرًا. لا تهدروا هذه الثروات التي لا تقدَّر بثمن. مهما كلّف الأمر، لا تنسوا أبدًا من أنتم، احذروا الأكاذيب، انطلقوا وعيشوا بالفضيلة. ستجدون الراحة في ذلك.
مع غروب الشمس على هذه السواحل، التي شهدت آلاف السنين من التاريخ، ينطلق كل واحد منكم الليلة في رحلةٍ فريدة. أتمنى أن تجدوا الحياة السعيدة عند كل منعطف وتحوُّل من هذه الرحلة الرائعة.

توزيع الشهادات على المتخرّجين
إثر الانتهاء من إلقاء الكلمات، بدأت عملية توزيع الشهادات، حيث سلّم رئيس الجامعة الدكتور الياس وراق وعمداء الكلّيّات الشهادات على الطلاب حسب الترتيب الآتي: معهد القدّيس يوحنا الدمشقي اللاهوتي، الأكاديميّة اللبنانيّة للفنون الجميلة، كلّيّة الآداب والعلوم، كلّيّة إدارة الأعمال، كلّيّة الهندسة، كليّة عصام فارس للتكنولوجيا، كلّيّة الصحّة العامّة وعلومها، كلّيّة الاختصاصات الطبّيّة، كلّيّة الطبّ والعلوم الطبّيّة.

وبعد الانتهاء من توزيع الشهادات، منح رئيس الجامعة رسميًّا الشهادة للمتخرّجين وسط أجواء من الفرح والحبور.
